Special Award 2007
In 2007, with the support of Lloyd's Council, Lloyd's Charities Trust launched its new Special Award. This annual award is a one-off donation of £50,000 to a charity making a positive contribution to an issue or subject of interest to the Lloyd's market.
The first recipient of this award in 2007 was International Alert. International Alert is an independent peacebuilding organisation that works to lay the foundations for lasting peace and security in communities affected by violent conflict.
The charity works in over 20 countries and territories around the world, both directly with people affected by violent conflict as well as government, EU and UN levels to shape both policy and practice in building sustainable peace. International Alert believes that building strong socio-economic foundations and promoting economic development is one of the major elements of strategic peacebuilding.
Lloyd's Charities Trust donation of £50,000 will help to establish International Alert's new Business and Peace Fund, to enable International Alert to work with businesses operating in conflict prone areas to help them contribute to the creation of a stable climate in those areas.
