Lives at risk - Samaritans

Samaritans is available 24 hours a day to provide confidential emotional support for people experiencing feelings of distress and despair, including those which may lead to suicide. Last year 17,500 volunteers answered 5 million calls for help at 202 Samaritan branches across the UK and Ireland.

The project
The “Skills for Life” project, to help young people across the UK struggling with emotional and mental health issues, will be supported by Lloyd’s Charities Trust.  Suicide amongst young people, particularly involving young men and also self harm are growing public health concerns.  The “Skills for Life” project will help schools and communities have the resources to deal with these issues.

Supporting young people.

A Suicide and Self Harm Response Toolkit and a Self Harm Training programme will be developed, with the toolkit to be used to support the school community during the time after an attempted or completed suicide, or in response to self harm.  The programme will equip teachers, others professionals and parents with skills to work positively with young people.

Dominic Rudd, Samaritans’ Chief Executive commented to Lloyds.com: “Life today can be very demanding. In a crisis it’s often very hard for individuals and communities to decide on what to do next.  People worry or are fearful about what else might happen.  Samaritans will now be able to ensure that we can put resources in place to support young people, teachers and school communities at these difficult times.”
