We have designed the learning and development here to enable each one of you to gain a broad range of skills, through a variety of methods – internal and external courses, group learning and briefings and on-the-job development.
Team building, financial awareness and personal effectiveness will be cornerstones of your development. After all, this is an organisation founded on face-to-face contact. For that reason also, we’ll work hard to develop your ability to communicate, influence and present to a variety of people, right up to your most senior colleagues.
Furthermore, because of the complex nature of our business, we will show you how to manage projects, increase your commercial awareness and make a direct impact on the area in which you’re working.
We firmly believe in tailoring development for individual needs rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach. So, when you arrive, we will develop an individually tailored development plan, reflecting your individual strengths, as well as the business area you are working in.
Induction
Lloyd’s is a complex organisation to understand. But not bewilderingly so. There is a treasure trove of information and activity for you to explore. We will begin by giving you a comprehensive induction programme, with an umbrella view of who’s who and what’s what. You will have the opportunity to meet key people from the different Lloyd’s departments, start looking at how to manage your personal development, and of course, get to know fellow graduates on the Lloyd’s programme and other insurance programmes.
Lloyd's and London Market Introductory Test (LLMIT)
Throughout the graduate programme, you’ll gain insights into how Lloyd’s works. But to help you really understand Lloyd’s we’ve developed the LLMIT in partnership with the International Underwriting Association, the London Market Insurance Brokers’ Committee and the Lloyd’s Market Association. The test – which every graduate will take within their first three months of the programme – is an excellent way to develop your awareness and understanding of how business is conducted here, and the roles and responsibilities of all those involved.
Diploma in Insurance
In addition to the LLMIT, you’ll also undertake the Diploma in Insurance, from the Chartered Insurance Institute: an industry-recognised qualification which will help you in your development, regardless of the area you end up in after the 18-month graduate programme. The Diploma will give you a comprehensive overview of insurance – and various related topics – and will prove invaluable in developing your specialist expertise. A range of modules is available covering off a variety of topics, including:
Insurance and business practice
Insurance law
Building a long-term business
Operational management
Specific classes of insurance, such as aviation and property
Support
You’ll have questions of course. So, we’ll make sure there’s always someone on hand to answer them, and offer any further guidance you might need.
To help you settle in, find your way around, and meet various members of the team, you’ll have your own dedicated and specifically trained 'buddy'. They’ll be available to offer any advice or meet up for a chat whenever you need them.
We believe it’s also important to give you the benefit of senior-level guidance and support. So, as well as a more senior mentor overlooking your development, there will be a member of the Lloyd’s leadership team taking a wider view of graduates’ development and ensuring they receive the very best exposure to the business.
