Learning and experience
Once I join the graduate scheme, can I do further studies or study for professional qualifications?
During the scheme, you are required to sit the Lloyd’s and London Market Introductory Test (LLMIT), which is a professional qualification and carries accreditations towards the Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII). You will also undertake the Certificate in Risk Management from The Institute of Risk Management, which will introduce you to the theory and practice of Risk Management. We wouldn’t; however, encourage graduates to study for other professional qualifications until you’ve completed the scheme. This is for two reasons:

1. The graduate development programme is very comprehensive and you’ll have little time during the scheme for additional study.

2. The scheme itself is designed to be generalist – giving you exposure to a variety of different areas of the business. Until you’ve completed the scheme and made a decision as to which career path you’d like to take, we’d recommend that you hold off committing yourself to studying for a professional qualification.

Will there be opportunities for overseas travel during my career?
Yes. After the graduate scheme you could find a position within one of our overseas offices, or be based in the UK but required to travel. However, during the graduate scheme it’s likely that you’ll be based in London.

Will I have the opportunity to work in different areas?
Absolutely. Our scheme is designed specifically to give you an insight into many different parts of Lloyd’s – across both the Corporation and the market. You’ll do this through a series of placements.

I’m interested specifically in a career in underwriting. Will I get the opportunity to take a placement in this?
While the placements we offer are varied and will give you an excellent overview of both the market and Corporation, we can’t guarantee that we can offer you specific placements – though we’ll make every effort to accommodate your preferences. Equally, while there are placements available where you’ll be based in a managing agent in the market, the majority of placements on offer are within the Corporation. So, if you’re absolutely certain that a career in underwriting is for you, you may like to check out the graduate opportunities within the market at the Lloyd's Market Association graduate recruitment site using the link on the right.

What support will I get in the first 18 months?
In a word, lots. All graduates will benefit from:

1. A 'buddy': they'll be there to help you make the transition into the world of work and answer any general questions you might have.

2. A mentor: he or she will provide more formalised support to you during the scheme. Your mentor will monitor your performance over the 18-month period, and provide you with coaching and advice to make the most of your placements and help you make choices about your future career.

3. Support from Senior Management: we’re assigning a senior director to oversee the programme as a whole.
